Writers' Workshop
|
Readers' Workshop is many students' favourite part of the day.
Since the format gives students tools for selecting and comprehending literature, students who were once reluctant to read now find themselves with the skills needed to be successful readers. Over the course of the year, our Grade Three students will read many books and in order to explore different genres, authors, and texts. The program emphasises the interaction between readers and text. Students learn to ask questions, make connections with prior knowledge, and demonstrate their comprehension in a number of ways. The program includes teacher conferences with students but emphasises students' independence and allows them to become successful readers outside of the classroom. |
Much like Readers' Workshop, our Grade Three Writers' Workshop is centred around independence.
Students begin by responding to a 'writing seed' which provides them writing inspiration. They then use that seed response to write in any genre they choose, such as a narrative, persuasive, informative and more. Our Grade Threes learn to follow the writing process: planning, drafting, editing, revising, conferencing, publishing and sharing their work. The Writers' Workshop sessions are structured around a predictable pattern of mini-lessons, independent writing, conferences and sharing. The more the students learn to write about what really matters to them, the greater their chance of growing into able thinkers. |
SMART SPELLING
We will continue using the spelling approach, SMART Spelling. Students will be involved in daily spelling activities with a specific focus. We will continue exploring various graphs, digraphs, trigraphs, quadgraphs and split digraphs. At the end of each week students will be tested on their words and there will be weekly homework to support this approach.

Homework
Each week, students are required to read at least 80 minutes of 'just right' books and record this reading in their diary.
